Ode to the Meat Man

I arrived today in London, but my thoughts still run to the Meat Man.  BorFest 2009 went off without a hitch last night.  The evil forces of Decemko that were trying to prevent Bor from completing his mission, realized that in firing the Meat Man they had gone too far.  The whole of the Climate Advocacy Institute had rallied in honor of the Meat Man. The advocacy training we had all received came in handy, and a boycott was quickly organized.  While the Meat Man remains unemployed, we did manage to drive down the price of beer by half a lira and to strike fear into the heart of the fascist powers at Decemko.

The Meat Man Track

At the Climate Advocacy Institute we have six tracks:

  1. Advocacy and New Media
  2. Debate and Argumentation
  3. Coaching Debate
  4. Intensive English
  5. Performance and Art Advocacy
  6. BorFest VIII (assuming we can keep Bor out of jail long enough to stage it)

Today, one of our trusted debate facilitators, Alex Just, after eating his first lamb shish,  came up with a stroke of genius: adding a Meat Man Track.

Napoleon is reported to have said that an army travels on its stomach, and we’re going to need a huge army to combat climate change.   If we could have an army of climate change activists fed by cooks as good as the Meat Man, the planet would be saved… Continue reading

In Bishkek, Looking for Grilled Meat!

One of the best things about coming to Central Asia is good grilled meat. I was a little disappointed when lunch yesterday was Italian food. I had spaghetti and grilled trout. It was tasty and supposedly cooked by an Italian chef, but I had to admit to longing for some shashlik.  The thing is, everyone else I was eating with are native to Central Asia, so I guess they don’t get excited as I do with the prospect of an authentic Kyrgyz dinner.

For dinner I did get grilled lamb ribs and they were good, but not as good as others I’ve had here.  They brew Carlsberg here locally, so that’s the freshest and least expensive beer to drink here.  Since I spent all day yesterday… Continue reading
