Pulitzer Shuts Out Online Publications

The Pulitzer Prizes were announced yesterday and the only journalist whose work appears primarily in an online media outlet that was even named a finalist for a prize was Matt Wuerker of Politico.  The committee recognized Wuerker for his “his engaging mix of art and ideas, resulting in cleverly conceived cartoons that persuade rather than rant and that sometimes use animation to widen their impact.”  It’s good to see that the inclusion of animation in some of his cartoons were cited, since it’s the one aspect of his work that makes it markedly different from traditional editorial cartooning.

Hoping an Online Publication Wins a Pulitzer

This year, for the first time, publications that appear only online are eligible to win a Pulitzer Prize.  As proud as I am of this blog, I am not expecting a Pulitzer,but I think it will be animportant moment when an online publication wins an Pulitzer.  For too long now there has been an unproductive debate over whether online publications are a  threat to journalism.  Rather than debating different ways to insure in a new business enviroment that high quality journalism continues to be produced, too much time is being spent asking whether the Internet is good or bad forjournalism.  This year’s Pulitzer prizes will be announced today… Continue reading
